Subject: Space1999: 1st season character development

it seems people label the first season acting as wooden, which is just not
true, and the characters as underdeveloped, but i question whether this is
even relevant in the context of first season 1999.

we have here a group of people flung out into a hostile universe, completely
at the mercy (or lack thereof) of forces beyond their control. at best, we
can expect their emotions to be ones of fear, paranoia, nervousness or
depression.

just because everyone doesn't go around smiling and kissing each others
bottoms all the time does not mean these are not interesting or real characters.

in other words, just because we don't know a lot of background info on the
characters, or see a lot of romantic interaction between them, just doesn't
mean their less believable.

so i feel this criticism is essentially invalid as far as the first season
goes.
sure, as a preference on could prefer more "development", but i really think
that in this instance (first season), this is not as serious a drawback (if
it is at all) as it may at first seem.

the film 2001 was also criticized in this regard, while STAR TREK NG is
praised to the high heavens because of it's, and i use the term loosely
here, "character development".

not that STNG wasn't able to convey or fit in this type of development, but
it was done to such an extreme, so self-consciously, that it comes off
superficial and false.

i think if second season 1999 would have caried on in a normal fashion from
first, we would have struck a perfect balance: natural development of the
characters as they had settled in, and had finally become use to their
situation.

and there are actually many instances of this in first season: kano and
koenig playing chess, koening and victor sitting around koenig's office
talking, the kendo match, putting together puzzles, the "picnic" in LAST
SUNSET, the guitar recital, birth of a child, etc.

but thankfully, they are small moments and not made out to be some grand
annoucement of "look how human our characters are".

thus, in closing, i feel that while one may not care for the depiction of
said characters in their situation, i also do not think one can criticize
the characters (or actors, since their subtle portayals are not bad acting)
for how they were depicted.

I Whole-Heartedly apologize for the childish behavior of some of our
list members they have been burned in the past and they have an in
- -built defense against being burned in the future. Try to understand
that a lot of our list members live, eat, and breath S1999 and that is
also part of their defense mechanism. They posses vast amounts of
"knowledge" about the S1999 universe and purport themselves to be
"experts" Your bomb-shell of information overloaded their brains and
that primitive defense mechanism got activated then kicked and overrode
any rational thought or netiquette that was learned later. Please
PLEASE! reconsider your withdrawal from our list, you may be a great
asset in disguise that could bring a whole new dimension to us. I also
know that if you give everyone that responded negatively another chance
and share your treasure with us they will certainly apologize and
welcome you correctly.

Subject: Space1999: 44 Inch Eagle Reproduction Chat

Alphans,
Hi, Barry here. I'm building a 44 inch reproduction Eagle and in researching
the project I have learned the source of some recogniseable Eagle parts. On the
top of the pods there are little round bumps with a small raised line extending
from it. It has an off center ring on the top. They are pieces of kit from a
Revell 1:24 scale Gemini Capsule . There are Two astronauts in there that I'm
told are the basis for the Alphans in the 5 inch Moonbuggy and in the 44 inch
Eagle. On one version of the Eagle there are rectangular groved things on the
edge above the directional thrusters. These are also in this kit. There might
also be some pieces of this kit behind the cage of the body.

Can anyone tell me the source of any other Eagle parts? I searched for the
Gemini kit for these parts and I think the detail will help make this model very
accurate to the original one(s).

Thanks,

Barry/All:

All the parts, including the astronauts, came from Revell's Gemini capsule
kit, largely because it was sold in the two different scales they needed.
Look at the pictures of Jim Small's Eagle shots at John Fleming's Cold
North Publishing site to see the parts behind the caging.

I have a source for the Revell 1/24 scale Gemini Capsule. It's available
from John Green Inc. for $44.00 =p&h. Let me know if you're interested and
I'll give you the details.

Subject: Space1999: Cyber Museum gets noticed in Quebec: the real Mc Coy... ;-)

Hi!

Ok, I'm late but better now than never... ;-)

Here's the translation of the actual review of Marcy's site as can be seen
in "Planete Internet Quebec", vol. 1, no. 4 (March 1997)... Enjoy!

From the article "Etes-vous branches culte?" (VERY approximate translation:
Are you into cult tv?...Whatever.... As they say, traditorre, trahitore....
;-) ):

"(...)The Space 1999 Cybermuseum (www.buffnet.net/~mk/1999.html) seems
to be the ideal base (Alpha?) to rediscover the world of John, Helena, Alan
and all their Courreges-dressed friends from the '70's. In addition to a
well-supplied list of links, you can discover wonderful pictures et read
novels from fans."

...That's approximately it, give or take a few translation mistakes. There
is a picture of the main page of the Cyber Museum with the old link to get
there. VERY short but fun. Unfortunately, the reviewer obviously went
through the site before Marcy moved it to its new location. Hopefully, this
can prove to be only a minor inconvenience.

Courreges? The article seems to compare the Alphans' uniform to the
Courreges outfits from the '70's. Question: what?!? ;-) Anybody knows this
'70's fashion reference? Marcy, Catherine, anyone? Help this poor brain of
mine, please! :-)

And now, for the Quebec folks, the actual text:

"Enfin le cybermuseum Cosmos 1999 (www.buffnet.net/~mk/1999.html) semble
etre le camp de base (Alpha?) ideal pour (re)decouvrir tout l'Univers de
John, Helena, Alan et leurs amis lookes Courreges des '70's. En plus d'une
liste de liens tres etoffee, on decouvre de belles images du cosmos et on
peut lire quelques nouvelles de fans."

Hi Faith & all alphans,

I'm not too sure if I'd address that Y1 was troubled by wooden characters.
I've always liked the subtle emotional ties they developed in Y1 that maybe
wasn't overtly address by "character development". The gentle reassuring hug
of Sandra by the Commander in "War Games" or one of my favorite scene in
"Another Time Another Place" when Victor is talking about the order of the
universe and pats Johns belly. At the age 11 I was very tied to all the
characters and enjoyed how they constantly address their harsh environment.
Maybe Helena should have let down her hair on occasions (ie like dancing in
OMOH) however it may have been too soon. Realizing they were adjusting to
Alpha as a "new" home must have taken some time. As I watch the show now I'm
amazed at how well it's held up. For my 33 birthday my husband bought me all
of y1 on video. (thanks gregg for taping them) Wow, uncut! Its like
watching Space:1999 the Special Edition. The few new scenes are great and
makes them like new!!!!

Jschill (Alphan from the windy city)
P.S. For all you y2 fans hang in there, though a devoted y1 fan I'm glad
there was a y2.

I have a bootleg copy of this I purchased at an SF convention a few years
back. I'd be happy to make copies for trade BUT I am very very slow at
this. If you don't believe me ask John Fleming. The two of us have the
longest ongoing video trade in the history of video!

Mostly due to my disorganization of my video library, 6month old daughter
and my other job! I wind up taping over the weekend if at all.

So email me a trade list, keep it off the main list so's not to clutter it
with wacky posts like...Phil where's the tape!!!! and John Fleming if I
havn't made a copy of this for you yet..do you want it.

Oh and BTW this tape has a couple of other items on it all mostly poor to
good quality.
Gerry Anderson at a TV show with fanderson people (SOrt of This is your life
sort of thing) A couple of andrson related ice cream commercials, the
famous Alien Invasion desert topping commercial in which desert toppings are
launch to fight off approaching alien pies or some such thing (Starlog had
an article about this titled alien attack)
This is no relation to the ALien Attack 1999 movie.

Also on the tape are promos for every episode of 1999 (AT oeast the 1st
season) It consists of the name of the episode and running the opening
credits including the "This Episode" Sequence. I think thats everything on
that tape. And no I havn't gotten around to making a cool label for it yet
like I did with my 1999 tapes. (And still working on my UFO tapes labels
... B5 too for that matter)

I bought two re-issues of the Revell 1/24 scale Gemini Capsule
at $10.00 US each. Picked them up at my local hobby store. Since
they just re-issued them a couple of years ago, I would think that
you ought to be able to find this kit for less than $44.00. Is
that $44.00 kit an original release (i.e. collector's item)? I
would think that the re-issued kit ought to be just fine for parts.

Subject: Space1999: OT WHat conventions are you attending Phil?

Hi Everybody!

Just thought you'd like to know I'll be attending the Lunacon Convention
this weekend March 7-9 1997 in RyeBrook NY. I won't be there friday but
definatly saturday and maybe sunday (If I'm not too tired)
http://www.lunacon.org/lunacon/lunacon.html

Also in April I'll be at I-Con in Stony Brook NY the first weekend in April.
http://www.iconsf.org/

So if you want to meet a real life 1999 listmember in the flesh contact me
if you'll be there. I promise you won't run sreaming from me for at least 5
minutes!

Also, at I-Con the two bright lights of my life will be with me, my wife & 6
month old (Eh 7 month old then) daughter!

I'll keep my eye open for 1999 stuff too, sometimes I-con (Not Lunacon so
much) can have some great 1999 stuff. Igf anyone wants a 1999 card set I've
seen them there for around $20. Let me know if I should pick something like
that up.

Later!
