>The Taybor - Don't hate it, Skipper. Just think it's more a Dr. Who episode

wait a minute, wait a minute! WAIT A MINUTE...

allright robert, what's this about THE STINKOR, i mean TAYBOR being like a
DR WHO episode?

lost in space, star trek, yes. maybe even B5, but DR WHO?!!?

DR WHO consistently has the best SF on tv, and the plots are very intricate
and well thought out stories, not gimmicky clown guest characters that a
whole episode is written around.

you probbaly didn't mean this comparison in a bad way, but you'll have to
pardon my hatred of that particular episode and it being compared to a
series way out of (second seasons) league.

>There are lots of people who actually prefer Series 2 and they can't and
>shouldn't be discounted (I'm no longer one of them). At least if there had
been four seasons, and 1999 was remembered as a success, there would almost
certainly be a big screen version rolling out on September 13, 1999. As
things stand I don't expect we will ever see such a thing.

well, if the reality were that we would be seeing a season 2 movie, well,
i'm even more happy that it didn't happen.

the reality in this scenario would be that season one would definitely be
treated like amistake, an anomaly to be completely dismissed, and that they
finally got things on track from season 2 on.

yeesh.

the mind reels...

Subject: Space1999: Season 1 vs. Season 2

ggreg wrote (lots of other stuff snipped):

ggreg please remember that your views are OPINION, not fact! While I agree
with a lot of the criticism of season 2, I am still definitely a Y2 fan.

I watched 1999 during it's original run with my Mom. I remember absolutely
nothing about season 1 from that time except how hard we both laughed at
the overflowing washing machine in Space Brain while my Season 2 memories
were surprisingly sharp. It was season 2 that captured my then 8-year-old
fancy. In the mid 70s there was very little television that showed a strong
female lead and I ate those shows up. Now here in season 2 was Maya, a
strong, independant alien who could do things that none of the men could.
It fit right in with all my other favorite shows of the time - The Bionic
Woman, Wonder Woman, and Charlie's Angels. Granted these shows were on the
whole corny, but at least the women were all strong and independant,
something pretty uncommon at the time. It took me years to figure out why I
liked The Bionic Woman but didn't really like The Six Million Dollar Man
(8-year-olds aren't too strong in the logic department).

It was years later that my fond memories of 1999 season 2 drove me to see
the series again. I connected with someone on America Online who rented and
copied all the year 2 laserdiscs for me about 5 years ago (memory is vague
about the exact time frame). Watching these showed me how silly some of the
episodes were but also reawakened my interest in the series as a whole.
When I got onto the web I immediately searched for 1999 pages, found the
list and a whole chain of events started that led up to the creation of the
Cyber Museum. The Cyber Museum is definitely an equal opportunity web page,
accepting things from either season, but it does owe it's entire existence
to Year 2.

Now I have wonderful copies of all the laserdiscs and can appreciate a lot
more of season 1 than I did at 8. However even at 29 I still find the
acting wooden at times, especially from Barbara Bain. I blame the director
for this, as she was wonderful in a huge variety of roles in Mission:
Impossible. Even though we saw very little of Cinnamon Carter's real
persona, Barbara Bain conveyed much of it in the role, so that I always saw
her as a very fun, playful person when she wasn't involved in the spy
business.

Well that's enough babbling from me for now. All I really wanted to say is
that some tolerance is in order. We can all have our different views,
different favorite season/episodes/character/etc. but still get along and
respect the views of others.

Marcy

Subject: Space1999: getting along

>ggreg please remember that your views are OPINION, not fact! While I agree

marcy, did i ever state my opinion was the only one, the top of the mountain
edict?
i'm expressing, in my own inimitable way, my OPINION.

if comes across as humorous or caustic, that's just how i express myself.
i hope that on the new list we are free to do that. i haven't insulted
anyone personally, just a show or two.

by nature, i'm not much of a poster to start with, more of a lurker
actually, but if this is the new touchy feely list, make sure you don't
accidently step on any toes, well... who could post anyhow? we'd all be too
afraid of the wording of our comments and the perception thereof, as opposed
to immediate, direct expression.

>Well that's enough babbling from me for now. All I really wanted to say is
>that some tolerance is in order. We can all have our different views,

>Marcy

so, in order to respect the views of others, should i preface every
criticism with "you know, i've seen better things coming out the back end of
a goat than year 2 S1999" (nothing personal! apologies to everyone who
likes year 2! please don't be offended! hugs!).

no, i didn't think so. but that is how i would feel if the thought of
possibly pissing someone off with a post of mine was a concern for me.

people piss me off all the time with comments and posts (which is usually
what rips me out of lurker mode in the first place), but i never take it
personally, think they should re-word their posts so as not to offend me.
never, never.

and how is expressing my view of these tv shows in anyway intolerant?

again, in order to be tolerant, should i re-word/re-think every
sentence/post, or just NOT post at all to avoid any accidental offense?

of course not. i say what i say, i yam what i yam (popeye/descartes?
marcy, i'll be disappointed if you don't get this reference!)

so, i feel i'm completely respecting the views of others and having
different views/preferences. and i thought i was "getting along" (not that
this should be a concern) just fine.

Hello Alphans!

Due to the new "regulations" here on Online Alpha, I am now passing monthly
profile updates via Allen Barnella (barnella@concentric.net). Thanks for
your help Allen!

There are two web pages set up by fellow Alphans. The most recent is Robert
Ruiz's "Cybrary" located at "http://frontpage.dnai.com/espresso/welcome.htm".
Robert has done so much for this list that he should be acknowledged. Marcy
K maintains the 1999 Cyber Museum at "http://www.space1999.net".

Marcy K and I have made some changes to the distribution of the monthly
Member's Profile. In the past, I sent out copies of the profile through the
list. This benefited many new members, but this was somewhat repetitive for
those subscribed for some time. Thanks to Marcy and her Cyberspace Museum,
the profile list is now available through her web page. The profile list is
located under "Works of Today's Alphans".

Marcy has requested that you do not use indentations in your profiles. This
makes it more difficult for Marcy to HTMLize her WWW page. Please use these
examples as your guide:

Thanks for speaking out on behalf of year 2!!

When I was a kid, it was Year two that REALLY got my interest! Tony was WAY
better than Paul, But I miss Victor..I like him better than Maya. BUT, I
like Maya too. My big thing was the whole atmosphere of Year One was so
sterile! Serious...A bit boring...especially to a teenager. I craved the
action scenes...romance, & humor of Year Two.

Of course, now that I'm an adult, I think I like Year one better...BUT, year
two is still a close second!!!

Am I the only one out there who enjoys yr 2 as much as yr 1? I find things I
truly enjoy about each yr and things I dislike.

I always wished that they kept Victor to be sort of a father figure to Maya,
helping her to adjust. I also wished that Maya wasn't the star of every
show, either by being the center of it, or by always being the one to save
them. But I did like the friendlier atmosphere. And I'm sorry but I never
did quite like Paul or at least as not as much as Tony. The writer's never
showed us the side that Sandra loved.

Only my opinion

In some stretches of "Dr. Who" a character like the Taybor would work
and even fit right in. Not the more thought provoking episodes as we
have discussed in the past, but the sillier, enjoy it for its silliness because
it has no other redeeming value, kinds of episodes. It seemed out of
place in Space: 1999, however. It wasn't credible in the least. More
Lost in Space or a misguided attempt at Harry Mudd from the original
"Star Trek." Still, I kept thinking as I watched it recently that the character
reminded me of something from Dr. Who, especially the Sylvestor McCoy
era or some of the Tom Baker episodes, though in Tom's episodes a silly
superficial character like this might have greater depth beyond its original
appearance. I can't find any great depth in The Taybor. I cringe when
his galactic trading card is displayed on the view screen. This is not
credible at all. Total fantasy, and not the kind of thing I tuned into 1999
expecting or wanting. It was more a children's show, but the character,
not the nature of the episode, is what makes me think of Dr. Who. Dr.
Who, in general, is quite well written and some episodes have been very
thought provoking and memorable.

Are you saying that we must endure an absolute DOG of an episode
like 'Data wonders what it is like to be in a human wedding' to get
character development?
Character development is BEST when it takes place in a PLOT--that is, a
situation which challenges the character. TOS didn't produce lame
clunkers like so many NG episodes--they have FAR more complex characters
by subjecting them to the tests of fire, not through stagey, plodding
parlor drama.
Kirk is far more complex than Picard because of this...Kirk was
challenged by the situations he encountered. He had to think. He had to
improvise. He had to cheat. He had to know what he was truly dedicated
to to know how to solve a situation, even though he may, on the surface
of it, have to sacrifice his beliefs to achieve the greater good.
Picard lives in a world where things are quite safe. He and his
crew will rarely bear any effects of a situation they are involved in,
should it go against them. Picard can safely follow the rules, cling to
noble philosophies (damn the long-term results), and indulge himself in
studying music, mental-masturbation on the holodeck, studying archaeology
because nothing in his life challenges him or his philosophy or his
abilities.
Which character do you care about more? The one who has to deal
with difficult issues, right up in his or her face, or someone who gets
everything free and easy?

>The real question is did you watch all the TNG episodes to "know" the
>characters before you judged them???

I watched the entire series, save for parts of the last two
years--by that time I could see they were going nowhere.

What IS happening here? The characters are never challenged.
Technology saves the day 90% of the time, the other ten percent our
characters are never in any real jeopardy. How can a character be
deepened without challenge?

I could go on for hours, but I'm sure the others on the list don't
want to see this become a 'Trek' list. Just let me wrap up making the
same points with 1999:

In the first season, there was always a proper sense of jeopardy,
either to the base or a character or characters, as they faced a powerful
unknown, dealt with forces beyond their control. By seeing individuals
stand up against overwhelming odds, THAT is where we see their character,
their views, their passions AT WORK, not simply stated in a line of
dialogue because the Base Headshrinker asks "How are you feeling?"
In the second season, even though the forces were less cosmic, they
were at least facing jeopardy, either from the bug-eyed monster of the
week or whatever. They didn't sit on the couch and tell each other how
they felt, they let us SEE how they felt in situations where their
emotions were raised and there was something on the line.
Action does not preclude character development--on the contrary,
action brings it about, and puts it forward to make it more apparent.

I wouldn't want to see a big screen version of Series 2 type stuff, but I
would love to see a big screen version of Space: 1999, though really it
doesn't seem to lend itself to that. You'd spend the first hour setting the
thing up, establishing the characters and the basic situation, and
launching them out into space, then probably a period of struggle, then a
vague hope of finding a new home, and then succeeding in finding it (of
course) since you "can't" have a downbeat/realistic ending in Hollywood
these days.

I'm even looking forward to the Lost in Space movie because I'm
assuming that they will treat it more like grownup material this time
(hoping anyway), and I want to see the kinds of choices they make,
whether it's entertaining or not. (I expect ultimately it will be unfulfilling.)

If I remember correctly, that was issue no.9, where Koenig's Eagle hits
an ancient space mine, and he and his copilot (don't remember his name, but
he wasn't one of the regular cast) had to figure out a way to signal Alpha
for a rescue in space. This was the first issue of the series I found back
then, and #10 was the last I saw. That issue was just a retelling of The
Metamorph, BTW.

Yeah, the ending for Black Sun was great! I also liked the music and the
crowd of people waiting to great those returning.

Subject: Space1999: Eagle models in Italy -Reply

Comet Miniatures sells a limited edition Eagle model that is based on the
Airfix/MPC but to a higher degree of authenticity (and harder to build I
hear). This version has metal bracing instead of plastic, and other details
are better as well. Their address is at my web site, and the exact page
is at:

               http://204.188.13.27/ccurmodl.htm

Comet Miniatures also sells commlock, stun gun, and launch pad models,
but the commlocks and stun guns aren't entirely authentic in their
detailing.

I will try to put up pictures of the Comet stun gun and commlock this
weekend, as Chris Potter was kind enough to send some to me recently.

If responding, please respond to the following address (my home e-mail),
as this is my work e-mail and I'm leaving for the weekend now:
